Brighton stalwart Pascal Gross has urged his teammates to keep their feet on the ground after Sunday’s win over Brentford lifted his side into second place in the Premier League table.
The Seagulls, who have already beaten leaders Arsenal and Manchester City this term, have emerged as unlikely title contenders.
A first-half Diego Gomez thunderbolt and a penalty from Gross, himself, were more than enough to see off the challenge of Keith Andrews’ side who had Igor Thiago sent off for violent conduct in the 23rd minute.
Heading into the international break, Fabian Hurzeler’s are just five points behind the defending champions, but Gross insists his side are not in the title frame.
‘No, we’re not, but we’ve had a really good start to the season,’ said the 35-year-old, currently enjoying his second spell at Brighton, when asked if his team could go toe-to-toe with Arsenal between now and May.
Can Brighton win the league?
‘It’s the beginning of the season. You see the Premier League and the margins and you look at the results.
‘We’re not getting carried away or anything like that, every game we have to suffer and sometimes it’s momentum.
‘But we’re really pleased to go into the international break like that.’
‘I practice a lot and it’s not always going in there,’ Gross added when asked about his emphatic spot kick that effectively settled the contest.
